Before starting vaping, individuals research everything they can find about it and want their experience to be enjoyable. After trying many different flavours and devices, you finally find a favourite. But what to do if suddenly it tastes burnt? This can not only give you a bad experience but also give you jitters to try something new.
Flavouring in e-liquids or vape juices enhances the experience of vaping to another level, and when it starts tasting burnt, you might want to find the reason and fix it as soon as possible.
Burnt taste while inhaling can happen for many reasons, and it is not necessary to buy a new vape every time. Following are some of the most common causes of the burnt taste and their fixes for the same:
Some of the Reasons Why Does Vape Taste Burnt.
1. E-liquid didn’t soak or absorb properly in the wick
In electronic cigarettes, a wick (usually made of cotton) is present in the device’s atomizer, which gently heats up when you start to vape. If not enough vape juice is soaked in the wick, the dry wick starts to heat up and give you an unpleasant burnt taste ruining your vaping experience.
FIX: Before every vaping session, check if your wick is soaked enough or not. If not, leave the e-liquid still for 5-10 minutes to absorb the wick. You won’t get the burnt taste now. If you do, it means that your coils need replacing.
2. The coil has reached its lifespan
Coils have a limited lifespan, and once it is reached, you get a burnt taste most of the time when you hit them. Using the same coil for a long time wears out the wick resulting in the burnt taste.
FIX: If you have a device with a replaceable coil system, you simply need to replace your coils by unscrewing your tank and cleaning the coil before replacement. But if you have a vaping device like cartomizers in which coils cannot be replaced, you will have to buy a new one.
3. Empty tank
If your vaping tank is empty, that is, it doesn’t contain any vaping liquid, or it has significantly less amount of e-liquid, you will likely get a burnt taste as there is no substance left to be heated and the wicking holes will be left exposed, making it dry.
FIX: Always check the amount of e-liquid in your tank before each vaping session. Refill the tank if it is running on a low amount. This will help you to avoid the burnt taste.
4. Using the wrong liquid for your device
If you use high nicotine level vape juices with high power vaping devices, you are most likely not to enjoy it and get the burnt taste. Similarly, using low nicotine level liquids with low power devices may not be the best choice. E-liquids with the proper amount of Vegetable Glycerol (VG) and Propylene Glycol (PG) must be used according to your vaping device. Generally, high VG liquids tend to be incompatible with most of the tanks. This will result in your device not drawing the liquid correctly, making the wick dry and burn when exposed to heat.
FIX: You must know which kind of liquid is best suitable for your device through thorough research to avoid mistakes in the future. Read the manual provided with the vaping device as a good reference.
5. Vaping at High Power
This problem arises with vaping devices with variable wattage or voltage. If you are vaping at high wattage, there is a high chance you might end up burning your e-liquid resulting in the burnt taste. Vaping at high power can also damage the coils.
FIX: Try to follow instructions on the manual of the vaping device and use the recommended wattage. If you are new to vaping, you can always start with a lower wattage and increase your choice and comfort. If you wish to vape at high intensity, if you enjoy it so much, upgrade to a vaping device with either constant high wattage or a variable one with higher maximum wattage.
6. Chain Vaping
Vaping constantly is known as chain vaping. It involves taking puffs without giving your device proper rest and not enough time to soak up more e-liquid, causing burnt tastes and reduced vapours production. Chain vaping may also reduce the lifespan of your coils resulting in frequent replacements.
FIX: Take puffs or hits in intervals like 15-20 seconds to let the device rest so that the wick gets enough time for absorbing the liquid. This will even help to prolong the lifespan of your vaping device. Also, try to take longer and slower puffs rather than short ones. If you have a locking system in your device, use it to constantly control your urge to vape.
Tips to Avoid the Burnt Taste
1. Priming coils regularly
Priming of coils refers to replacing coils, ensuring soaking up or absorption of e-liquid in your wick and making it saturated so that it doesn’t remain dry. Whenever you replace your coil, prime it properly with 2-3 drops of e-liquid directly into the coil and even take dry hits without producing heat to create suction, ensuring proper absorption of the vape juice. It also helps to increase the lifespan of the coil.
2. Do not store your device or products in low temperatures
The viscosity of the e-liquid increases with a decrease in temperature. As the viscosity increases, the consistency of the e-liquid becomes thick, and it obstructs the flow of the e-liquid in the atomizer or the wick. This will end up leaving the wick dry. Hence, store your device in temperatures ranging from 0-25 degrees celsius.
3. Priming Refillable kits
If your device doesn’t need a vape tank but uses refillable kits, prime it regularly to have an excellent vaping experience. This involves filling your device with the liquid and saturating it for some time, say ten minutes. After this, inhale a few times (without producing heat) to initiate liquid flow and have a smooth experience later.
